For government agencies, nonprofit organizations and others, Public Health Solutions provides services to enable them to enhance their effectiveness and strengthen their capacity to have an impact and efficiently manage funds.
Our roots are in scientific research. We were founded in 1957 under the name Medical and Health Research Association of New York City to enable the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and other organizations to conduct health research to inform their work. Over the years, we saw an opportunity and a need to build upon this foundation of rigorous scientific research to link research and practice in dynamic ways to improve the health of communities. Today, as Public Health Solutions, we use research wherever we can to help illuminate critical public health issues and to design, implement and assess effective methods for preventing disease and improving health in New York City and beyond. Job Description & Experience: Neighborhood WIC, a program of Public Health Solutions, provides special supplemental foods, nutrition education and counseling to low-income pregnant women, infants and children up to age five who are at nutritional risk. We are seeking a part-time bilingual (English/Spanish or Mandarin) Shopping Matters Facilitator to travel between our Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn locations to guide mothers through food shopping tours and encourage them to make healthy and economical choices.
With no more than 6 clients (2 or 3 groups), the Shopping Matters Facilitator will: - Prepare attendance log of interested clients - Enthusiastically greet clients at the center and inform them about the tour expectations - Assist clients in completing evaluation forms prior to the tour - Talk about supermarket layout strategies - Select food groups to discuss as per clients' choice - Assign challenges to each group - Walk with the clients to the supermarket - Assist clients with making budgeting and food selection decisions - Assist clients in completing evaluation forms after the tour - Take photos of clients and purchases when permitted. - Summarize the tour and what occurred in a report format - Attend all meetings and trainings - Document work activities Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent - Must be bilingual (English/Spanish or English/Mandarin) - Must be willing and able to travel between WIC centers throughout the city (Brooklyn, Queens & Bronx) - Approachable and display enthusiasm for healthy living - Physically capable of walking 20 minutes or more - Strongly prefer basic food safety/sanitation and culinary skills - Basic computer knowledge
