5 Ways to Boost Your Confidence at Work

If you're like most people, you spend a good chunk of your week at work. Even if you love your job, there are times when it can be tempting to indulge negative feelings such as worry, insecurity and self-doubt. Take control of your mental well-being by using the following tips for being happier and calmer at work.

1. Be Your Own Biggest Fan

Try changing your desktop wallpaper to a picture of yourself. What better way to give yourself a boost of confidence than by adorning your work space with one of your favorite selfies? The idea may sound a bit self-absorbed, but looking at a happy picture of yourself can really inspire positive thoughts and memories. The idea isn't so much about being boastful, but of accepting yourself, says Michele Mavi, career expert for Atrium Staffing.

2. Listen

Practice actively listening to others while at work: Step away from the computer, put down the stack of papers, look them in the eye, and really give your undivided attention. The better you listen, the more people will trust and open up to you, which can result in much better relations between you and your coworkers. You may even make a new friend.

3. Disconnect

Technology and social media have taken over the lives of average Americans. Constantly looking at a screen, scrolling for news and checking in has many people feeling like slaves to their devices. Do yourself a big favor, and set aside several "breaks" throughout the day to put down the cell phone, turn on your computer's screen saver and just take in the real world for a moment. Take a bathroom break, walk around the office, get a glass of water, or go chat briefly with a coworker.

4. Keep Learning

Just because you're no longer in school doesn't mean you can't keep learning new things. Search for a local or online course in a subject of interest to you, either work-related or not. The world is a fascinating place, and a great way to be happier in general is to immerse yourself in new knowledge. It can be just the inspiration you need to begin seeing things in new ways at work.

5. Focus on Positivity

It's easy to let negative thoughts and behaviors take charge of your day at work. Office politics, gossip and competition make for one stressful mix, and if you're not careful, you may find yourself dealing with negative self-talk and feelings of doubt or defeat. To protect yourself, spend more time with positive, upbeat co-workers — happy attitudes are infectious. Steer clear of the gossip hounds; talking about others only spreads negativity.

The happier, more relaxed and less stressed you are, the more effective and productive you can be at work. Use these strategies every day to love yourself more and to remember to be more mindful and positive. Then watch the benefits unfold.
